What are the common coagulants?
Types of inorganic coagulants
Aluminium forms both acidic and alkaline salts, which are usually white or clear like water.
The trivalent salts are efficient coagulants whereas the bivalent salts are used as raw materials or directly for phosphorus removal from water.
The range of specific properties enables coagulant users to find the best product or combination of products for their specific water treatment application. For example, coagulants can be:
Sulfate or chloride
Solids or liquids. The majority are in aqueous solution including aluminium sulfate or ferric chloride.
Acidic or alkaline. Aluminium salts such as poly aluminium chloride have a certain level of alkalinity which is deliberately engineered.
Able to bond with different numbers of atoms (two or three valence). Iron salts can be applied in two valences: ferric or ferrous.
All coagulants are corrosive and should be handled according to the safety instructions provided with each product. When used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, coagulants have no effect on human health or the environment.
